The Body and Nervous System Love Variation

The body doesn't operate according to a single fixed truth. Throughout the day, our position, the direction we face, the speed of our movement, the load we carry, and even how we breathe are constantly changing. The nervous system brings together all of this information and generates a movement solution suited to that moment.

When we always move in the same position, the same direction, and at the same speed, the body uses a familiar solution again and again. This repetition can be useful — it builds familiarity with a movement, supports coordination, and creates a sense of predictability.

But when movement conditions change, the information the body receives changes too. The centre of gravity shifts. Sensory input from the joints differs. The visual system and balance system encounter new data. The nervous system has to reorganise all of this information.

Experiencing a movement in different positions, directions, speeds and loads can offer the body more than one path for that movement.

Motor learning research suggests that practising a skill under varying conditions can support the transfer of that learned movement to new situations. The point isn't only to be able to perform a movement — it's for the body to be able to generate a new solution when conditions change.

Posture Isn't a Single Position

When we think of posture, we often encounter the idea that there is one 'correct position' the body should reach and maintain. But the body doesn't stay fixed throughout the day. We sit, stand up, walk, bend, turn, carry something, or reach to one side.

Thinking of good posture only as perfectly holding a particular position can be limiting. Posture can also be understood as the body's capacity to reorganise itself according to changing conditions.

What matters isn't the body being locked into one position, but being able to access different options when needed.


Breathing Also Changes with Conditions

A similar approach applies to breathing. Rather than placing breath into a single 'correct' template, we can look at how the body regulates breathing in different situations. The rhythm and volume of breath while resting, walking, carrying a load, speaking, or during a demanding movement doesn't stay the same.

Because breathing, like posture, is not static. It's a living response the body gives to its current conditions. The aim here isn't to breathe the same way in every situation — it's to open space for breathing to be able to change according to need.


Myotherapy: More Than Fixing a Region

In myotherapy, the point isn't only to release a muscle that feels tense. When the movement capacity of a tissue changes, a new possibility opens up for the body. But for this new capacity to become usable, the body needs to experience it in movement.

Loading a region from different directions, moving a joint through different angles, changing the direction of contact, or integrating breath into movement can all offer the nervous system different sensory information.

A session can open a door. How the body learns to walk through it becomes possible through movement, experience and time.


What About Safety?

In trauma-informed work, we can sometimes equate safety with the elimination of all variables. When everything stays the same, when we know what's coming, and when control is ours, we may feel more safe.

Predictability can indeed matter for the nervous system. But safety doesn't only mean nothing changes.

Sometimes safety is being able to reorganise when something shifts. Being able to stay in a different position. Being able to change the rhythm when needed. Being able to regulate the breath again. Being able to let the body find another solution.

The point isn't to declare sameness 'bad' and variation 'good'. The point is having options.


Today, Offer the Body a Small Option

We don't need large or demanding movements to create variation. Think of a simple movement you do often today: standing up from a chair, reaching for a shelf, walking, or shifting direction while seated. Try doing it a little more slowly, looking in a different direction, or shifting your weight to another point.

Then ask yourself: What was different in my body this time? Where did I feel more effort, where more ease? How did my breath respond to this change?

The aim isn't to find what's better or more correct. It's to be curious about what the body can do in different conditions.


Perhaps the real goal of body work

isn't reaching a single truth.

It's creating more options.
