Fandom and the Nervous System: Why We Don't Just Believe an Idea — We Bond with It

When we hear the word "fan", we think of stadiums, jerseys, chants. But fandom is actually a pattern of behaviour that spreads across a much wider part of our lives. We can be "fans" of a political view, a way of eating, a philosophy of life.

Why do some ideas stop being just opinions and become part of our identity? The answer may lie deep within our nervous system.

 

Our Brains Value Belonging More Than Being Right

Humans are social beings with very old roots. Belonging to a community was once a matter of survival; being alone was a threat.

This is why our nervous system is still wired to protect the group we belong to. Sometimes, without realising it, we're not defending the truth of what we believe — we're protecting the sense of belonging that comes with it.

 

What Happens When an Idea Becomes an Identity?

When a thought stops being "an approach that works for me" and becomes "this is who I am", any criticism aimed at it starts to feel like a personal attack.

At that point, it's no longer an exchange of ideas — it's a matter of the nervous system's sense of safety. When people encounter a different viewpoint, they may shift from curiosity to defence.

 

What Does the Science Say?

A review published in Frontiers in Psychology by a research team from King's College London looks at football fandom through the lens of evolutionary neuroscience.

The human brain historically evolved within small, tightly-bonded groups; modern teams activate these ancient "in-group bonding" mechanisms. We can develop a sense of kinship with millions of people we've never met — simply because we support the same team.

On match days, noticeable changes occur in heart rate and hormones such as testosterone and cortisol; the intensity of these responses can correlate with the degree of attachment to the team.

Rituals like chanting together, singing, and moving in sync have been linked to the release of endogenous opioids — meaning that chanting shoulder-to-shoulder in the stands quite literally soothes your nervous system.

Rituals also play an important role when it comes to uncertainty and anxiety: simple ritualised behaviours can reduce anxiety, and anxiety can in turn trigger ritual behaviours on its own.

 

Is Fandom a Bad Thing? No.

Belonging is one of our most fundamental human needs. Feeling part of a community can have a regulating, balancing effect on the nervous system.

The problem begins when the line between "belonging" and "identifying" blurs. Liking an idea is one thing; seeing everyone outside that idea as a threat is something else entirely. The research also points out that very strong identity fusion with a club can sometimes become maladaptive, having an outsized effect on mood.

 

"Us and Them": Threat Perception Erases Complexity

When the nervous system feels under threat, our perception of the world simplifies. Grey areas disappear; everything collapses into "right" and "wrong". Curiosity decreases, defensiveness increases.

What's striking is that this bias doesn't operate at a conscious level — it works at the most basic level of perception. According to the research, group membership affects the brain's perceptual "predictions" — meaning we can genuinely "see" the same foul differently, depending on which team we support.

 

Perhaps the Real Question Is This

Can I be a fan of an idea without becoming entirely fused with it? Can I feel like I belong to a community while still making room for what's different?

 

Flexibility may not lie in being attached to nothing — but in staying human even while being attached. Because for the nervous system, the greatest source of safety isn't always being right — sometimes it's being able to stay connected even amid difference.

 

What Does This Mean for Myotherapy?

Our musculoskeletal system and nervous system are in constant communication. A chronic perception of threat — a "defence mode" — shows up not only in our thoughts but in our muscles too, as chronic tension in the shoulders and neck.

Living constantly in an "us versus them" mode keeps the nervous system in a state of chronic alert.

 

Regulating the nervous system —

releasing the muscles through breath, touch, and the right movement —

can open space for the mind to become more open, less defensive, and more curious too.
